It depends on the opening and the finish more than anything else. A made-to-measure door in timber-look steel sits well below one clad in natural timber, aluminium slats fall between the two depending on spacing and profile, and a heavier door can mean a stronger opener as well. Removal of the old door, access and any structural packing round the opening also count. Usually a standard sectional door in a woodgrain or smooth flush finish, in a colour chosen to suit the house. It gives most of the effect of a clad door at a stock-door price, with a fraction of the weight and no oiling. A true custom build is worth it when the opening is an unusual size or the design needs real timber or open slats.

Timber-look steel is the easier life. Natural timber is beautiful but needs sealing or oiling regularly, and a door facing west or north cops enough sun to grey and split untreated boards quickly. If you love the real thing and do not mind the upkeep, an east- or south-facing door, or one under a deep eave, gives it a fighting chance.

Often, yes. Doors can be made to non-standard widths and heights, and there are low-headroom track arrangements for garages with a beam or a short ceiling. What we cannot change is the physics: a sectional needs some headroom and a roller needs room for the drum. We measure those clearances before promising anything.

We advise against it. Adding boards to a door that was balanced for its original weight overloads the springs and the opener, and a spring re-tensioned by someone without the right bars is dangerous. If you want to change the look of a door you already have, ask us to check whether its springs and motor can carry the extra load first.

The build is the long part, and it depends on the maker and the finish, so we give you the manufacturer's date once the order is placed rather than a guess on the day we measure. Installing a single residential door usually takes most of a day, including removal of the old one and setting up the opener.

Sometimes. A correctly balanced door should weigh very little to the opener, but motors are rated for door size and type, and a big clad door can be past what an older unit is built for. We check the model and its rating at the measure and tell you whether it stays or needs replacing.
