What brand of garage door is best?

Accepted Answer

No single make wins on every house. The right door depends on the opening size, how much headroom the garage has, whether you want insulation, how exposed the site is to wind, and the finish you are after. B&D, Gliderol, Steel-Line and Centurion Garage Doors all build solid doors; the bigger difference over the years is how well the door was fitted and whether the springs were set up for its weight. A good door hung badly will give more trouble than an average one hung properly.

Which garage door brands are the biggest in Australia?

The names you will see most on Australian homes are B&D, Gliderol, Steel-Line and Centurion Garage Doors, with Taurean, Dominator, Doorworks and the German maker Hörmann also in the mix. Is Gliderol or B&D better?

Both are long-standing Australian makers of roller and sectional doors, and both have their own opener ranges. For a repair it hardly matters: the springs, cables and bearings wear the same way. For a new door, compare the specific models on size, colour range, wind rating and the opener it pairs with, rather than the badge. We supply and install both, so we can price the two side by side for your opening.

What goes wrong with Gliderol garage doors?

Mostly the same things that go wrong with any roller door as it ages: the curtain loses spring tension and feels heavy, the drum bearings get noisy, the guides get knocked out of line, or the bottom rail catches. How can I tell what make my garage door is?

Look for a sticker or stamped name on the inside of the door. On a roller door, raise it part-way and check the bottom bar and the brackets either side of the drum. On a sectional, check the lowest panel and the vertical tracks. The opener carries its own label on the casing. If you cannot find anything, a couple of photos attached to a quote request is usually enough for us to identify it.

Do you work on brands that are not listed or no longer made?

Yes. Most of a garage door is standard hardware, so springs, cables, rollers, bearings and locks can be sourced for doors whose maker has gone. The harder part is cosmetic: a discontinued panel profile or colour may not be available, and then we will tell you what the closest match looks like before anything is ordered.

Does the brand change what a repair costs?

Accepted Answer

Less than people expect. The price mostly follows the part involved, the size and type of door, how easy the job is to reach and whether it is after hours.
