The cables themselves are not the expensive part; the price is set by what else needs doing. A plain pair on a single door is the cheapest case. It goes up if the drums are worn, if a spring has to be replaced at the same time, if the door ran crooked and rollers or track need straightening, or if it's a standard or after-hours visit. We'd rather you didn't. With one cable gone, only one side is being lifted, so the door twists as it rises and can jam hard in the track or drop back crooked. If the car absolutely has to come out, use two people, lift both sides together, take it to full height and prop it on both sides before anything passes underneath. Otherwise, leave it closed and ring us; it is a quick repair when the door hasn't been forced.
Honestly, it's a job we'd keep for ourselves. The cables anchor to a shaft under full spring tension, and that tension has to be wound down with proper bars, in the right order, before the cable ends can be released. The new cables then need the correct length for the door and the same number of turns on each drum, or the door hangs crooked and chews through them. Get it wrong and the shaft can spin without warning.
It depends on cycles and conditions more than years. A cable on a door used a few times a day and kept aligned can outlast a set of springs. The same cable on a door near the ocean, or one that has run slightly crooked for a while, frays and rusts much sooner. The warning signs are broken strands at the drum or bottom bracket, a rusty sheen on the wire, or a cable starting to unwind; catch them at a routine service rather than waiting for the snap.
Carefully, and ideally not by yourself. If the opener is still engaged, the motor's chain or belt is what is holding the door up, so don't pull the red release cord: that hands the full weight to a door with one cable, and it can come down hard and crooked. Move the car out, keep people away from the opening, and treat it as urgent; a door stuck open is a security problem as well as a mechanical one.
