My Glidermatic strains and stops. Is the motor dying?

Often it is not. On a roller door the spring inside the drum lifts the curtain and the motor just guides it, so a straining opener is usually reporting a spring that has lost tension. Lift the door by hand with the opener released: if it is heavy or will not stay put, the spring is the problem and a new motor would only inherit it.

Can you still get parts for a Glidermatic?

For the common units, yes — gears, capacitors, limit assemblies and remotes are all obtainable. Control boards for the oldest openers are the ones that eventually run out, and that is usually the point where replacement is the sensible call rather than a repair.

Do I need a Gliderol opener on a Gliderol door?

No. Doors and openers are rarely the same brand anyway, and any correctly rated roller door opener will run a Gliderol curtain. What matters is the rating for your door's weight, not matching badges.

How often should a roller door opener be serviced?

They are honest, uncomplicated units, mounted beside the drum, and there is very little inside one that cannot be replaced on its own — which is exactly why we so rarely condemn them, and why a fault is usually a straightforward opener repair.

The important thing to understand about a roller door opener is how little of the lifting it actually does. The spring inside the drum carries the weight of the curtain; the motor guides it and holds it shut. When the spring weakens, the motor suddenly finds itself hauling a curtain that could weigh sixty kilograms or more, and it will not last long doing that.

So a Glidermatic that has started grinding, stalling or tripping is very often reporting a spring problem rather than a motor problem.
