The Opener on a Gliderol Roller Door
Gliderol has been Australian-owned since 1974 and supplies its Glidermatic openers with its roller doors. They are honest, uncomplicated units, mounted beside the drum, and there is very little inside one that cannot be replaced on its own — which is exactly why we so rarely condemn them.
The important thing to understand about a roller door opener is how little of the lifting it actually does. The spring inside the drum carries the weight of the curtain; the motor guides it and holds it shut. When the spring weakens, the motor suddenly finds itself hauling a curtain that could weigh sixty kilograms or more, and it will not last long doing that.
So a Glidermatic that has started grinding, stalling or tripping is very often reporting a spring problem rather than a motor problem. We check the balance by hand before touching the opener, because fitting a new motor to a door that is out of balance simply buys you a couple of years and the same conversation.
