A garage door motor that is not working falls into one of three groups. Silent and dark means no power: a tripped safety switch, a dead power point or a board killed by a surge. Lit but silent means the opener is ignoring you: a locked wall console, a remote fault or a failed board. Running without moving the door means a stripped gear, a disengaged carriage, or a broken spring making the door too heavy. Common Causes
No power reaching the opener
Summer storms trip safety switches and knock out boards. Check the powerhead light, the power point and the switchboard. If the opener has a battery backup, that battery may simply be flat.
Stripped drive gear
The classic older-opener failure: the motor whirrs but the nylon gear that turns the chain or belt has worn smooth. White plastic dust on the floor under the unit gives it away.
Thermal cut-out
An opener in a hot tin-roofed garage, run several times in a row, overheats and shuts itself down until it cools. It comes back later, then does it again.
Logic board failure
The circuit board takes the hit from surges and age. Symptoms run from a dead unit to a flashing fault code with no movement. Garage door opener repair replaces boards while parts are still made.
Carriage disengaged, or door too heavy
With the red cord pulled, the trolley moves and the door does not. With a snapped spring, the motor strains and stops — it was never built to lift the door alone.
Safety circuit open

- Look at the wall console for a lock or vacation setting and switch it off
- Listen as you press the button: silence, a click, a hum or a free-running motor each point somewhere different
- With the door closed, check the carriage is clipped onto the trolley and the release cord is not hanging loose
- Glance at the spring above the door for a visible break before blaming the motor
Do not attempt
- Do not keep hitting the button when the motor hums without moving; the gear is already failing
- Do not open the motor housing while it is plugged in — the board runs at mains voltage
- Do not force the door by hand with the carriage still engaged; you will strip the drive
- Do not buy a new opener before the springs are checked — a heavy door wrecks a new motor just as quickly

If the door then stops short or overshoots, the travel limits need re-learning, usually with a set button or dial on the powerhead — your model's manual has the sequence. No reset fixes a stripped gear, a broken spring or a dead board.
Listen and look at the rail together. A motor that whirrs freely while the chain or belt stays still has a stripped internal gear. A trolley that travels without the door means the carriage is unhooked; re-clip it with the door closed. A motor that labours for a second and stops is being asked to lift a door whose spring has broken. Only the middle one is a do-it-yourself fix.
A click with no movement is usually a relay on the board switching while the motor fails to turn — a burnt-out capacitor, a seized motor or a board fault. On some openers it is the unit refusing to run because the safety beams or a lock input are open, in which case a light will be flashing too. Check the beams and the console lock first; if both are fine, the board or motor needs testing.
A genuinely dead motor is rarer than people expect. Most calls that start as 'the motor has died' end with a board, capacitor, gear or receiver, each replaceable while the model is supported.
