Garage Door Motor Not Responding?

Dead silence, a hum that goes nowhere, or a click and nothing. Each sound points at a different fault — and one of them is not the motor at all.

When a garage door motor stops responding, the sound it makes identifies the fault. Total silence with no light points to power — a tripped RCD, an unplugged unit or a failed transformer. A hum with no movement usually means a stripped drive gear or a failed capacitor, so the motor is energised but cannot drive. A single click and nothing is typically the logic board or a seized motor. And a motor that strains, moves a little and gives up is often not a motor fault at all: the door has become too heavy because a spring has broken. Common Causes

No power reaching the opener

A tripped RCD, a switched-off outlet after garage work, or a failed internal transformer. Always the first thing to rule out because it costs nothing.

Stripped drive gear

The plastic gear inside the powerhead shears its teeth. The motor spins audibly and the door does not move — a classic on older Merlin and B&D units.

Failed capacitor

The motor hums but cannot start turning under load. Cheap to replace, and often mistaken for a dead motor entirely.

Logic board failure

One click, or intermittent behaviour that comes and goes with the weather. Boards degrade with heat, humidity and salt in the air.

A broken spring, not a broken motor

The opener is fine but is being asked to lift a door it was never designed to carry alone. It strains, stops, then trips its own overload.

Safety circuit halting operation

Some openers refuse to run at all when a sensor is disconnected or faulty, which reads as a dead motor rather than a sensor fault.

What You Can Check Safely

Safe to check yourself

  • Check the opener's light and the RCD in your switchboard — no light at all means a power problem
  • Listen carefully and note the sound: silence, hum, click or strain each mean something different
  • Try the wall button as well as the remote to rule out the handset
  • With the door DOWN, pull the manual release and lift by hand — very heavy means the spring, not the motor
  • Check both safety sensor LEDs are lit, since some openers will not run with a sensor fault

Do not attempt

  • Do not open the powerhead casing — mains voltage and a wound spring system are both in there
  • Do not repeatedly retry a humming motor; a stalled motor overheats and burns out for good
  • Do not raise the force setting to make it push harder
  • Do not assume the motor is dead until the hand-lift test has ruled out the springs

When to Call a Technician

Call a technician straight away if any of the following apply:

  • The motor hums, clicks or runs without moving the door
  • The opener has power and light but will not respond to anything
  • The door is very heavy to lift by hand with the motor disengaged
  • There is a burning smell or scorching around the powerhead
  • Operation is intermittent — working some days, dead on others
