Check the RCD while you're at the switchboard

Reset 2: re-pairing remotes

If the wall button works but a remote doesn't, the remote has lost its rolling-code sync or its battery. Fresh battery first. The opener doesn't know where your floor is — it's taught, via travel limits stored in its memory. When those drift (age, surges, a slipping drive), the symptoms are distinctive: the door stops 10cm short of the floor, or slams the last stretch, or touches down and immediately reverses as though it hit something, or opens only partway. Most openers re-teach limits through a sequence on the powerhead — typically holding a set button until the unit enters programming, driving the door to fully-closed with the arrows, confirming, then repeating for fully-open. Set limits carefully — they're a safety setting

A down-limit set too deep makes the door press into the floor and strain the motor on every cycle; too shallow leaves a gap. And after ANY limit change, test the auto-reverse with a piece of timber on the floor — the force and limit settings interact, and a door that no longer reverses on contact is a genuine hazard, especially with kids and pets.

What a reset can't fix

A reset repairs confusion, not hardware. It won't help a motor that hums without moving (stripped drive gear or failed capacitor), remotes that keep dropping out (aging receiver), sensors that stay blind after cleaning and alignment (wiring or dead units), or a door that's suddenly enormous to lift by hand — that last one is a snapped spring, the most common garage door failure of all, and the motor was never the problem. The honest test before any electronics troubleshooting: door closed, manual release pulled, lift by hand. If the door itself isn't light and smooth, fix the mechanics first; no amount of resetting teaches a motor to lift 100kg it was never built to carry.
