Garage remotes use rolling codes: the remote and the opener share a cryptographic sequence that changes on every press, which is why you can't just copy a neighbour's remote and why pairing has to happen at the powerhead — physical access to the motor is the security model. Once you know that, programming stops being mysterious: you're introducing a new remote to the motor, in person, once.
The universal three-step method
Works on nearly every Australian opener
- Get to the powerhead (the motor box on the ceiling or, for roller doors, on the axle) with a ladder and good light
- Press and RELEASE the learn/code button — a light usually starts blinking to show learn mode is open
- Within ~30 seconds, press and hold the chosen remote button until the opener flashes or clicks
- Test from inside the garage, then again from the driveway — pairing and range are separate things
- Repeat for each extra remote; most modern openers store several
Press, don't hold, the learn button
On many openers, holding the learn button for 6–10 seconds is the MEMORY WIPE — it deletes every remote the motor knows, including the ones in the house and both cars. Short press to teach, long press to forget. Getting this backwards is the most common way a simple pairing turns into re-programming the whole household.
Finding the learn button, brand by brand
- Merlin: behind or beside the light lens on the powerhead; newer units use a clearly marked button near the antenna
- B&D (Controll-A-Door): under the light cover or on the back panel; some models pair via a door-mounted wall unit
- Centurion / ATA: a small button on the receiver end of the unit, often recessed — a blinking LED confirms learn mode
- Gliderol roller-door motors: on the motor housing on the axle, sometimes behind a rubber grommet
- Steel-Line / Avanti: on the powerhead near the aerial wire; the indicator flashes during the learn window

Pairing a car's built-in buttons
In-car systems (HomeLink and similar) add one wrinkle: the car has to learn the remote AND the opener has to learn the car. The usual sequence is to first train the car's button from a working handheld remote held close to it, then put the opener into learn mode and press the car's button — some cars need the button pressed two or three times in a rhythm before the opener accepts it. Rolling-code openers always need that second, at-the-powerhead step; if the car 'learned' the remote but the door ignores it, that's the step that got skipped.
When a remote refuses to pair
Three causes cover nearly every failed pairing, and most cases of a remote that has stopped working altogether. First, protocol mismatch: cheap generic remotes bought online often speak a different rolling-code dialect and will never pair reliably, however many times you try — brand-matched or proven-compatible remotes are the fix. Second, full memory: older openers store a fixed number of remotes, and once full they silently refuse new ones until the memory is cleared (which un-pairs everything, so re-programming the household follows). Third, a failing receiver: the classic sign is a remote that pairs happily, works for days, then drops out — that's the powerhead's receiver board aging, common past ten years, and no quantity of new remotes fixes it — that is an opener repair.
Lost or stolen remotes: wipe first
A missing remote still opens your garage until the motor's memory is wiped. If it disappeared with anything carrying your address — a handbag, a glovebox — treat it as urgent: long-press the learn button to clear every stored code, then re-pair only the remotes in your hand. It takes minutes and turns the lost remote into a paperweight. This is the one legitimate everyday use of the memory-wipe function.
When it's cheaper to hand it over
In Perth, replacement remotes are priced per handset plus a single attendance that covers programming as many of them as you need — so adding a spare only ever costs the extra handset. That visit also quietly covers the things DIY can't: confirming the protocol match before buying, wiping lost remotes properly, checking the receiver and antenna when range is poor, and telling you honestly when the real problem is a receiver repair or a motor at end of life rather than another handset. If you've had two failed attempts with the ladder, the maths already favours the visit.
