The Roller Door Brand Behind a Lot of Perth Garages
Gliderol has been Australian-owned since 1974 and is known first and foremost for roller doors. Its Essentials curtains are on a great many Perth homes, often fitted by a builder who never mentioned the brand at all, and the sectional Genesis range turns up on newer builds. It is a straightforward door to work on, which is part of why it stays common.
A roller door lives or dies on its spring. The spring sits inside the drum at the top and does the lifting; the opener only guides the curtain and holds it shut. When the spring weakens, the motor starts hauling the full weight of the steel and everything downstream — gears, brackets, the curtain's own bottom rail — takes more punishment than it should. A door that has become heavy to lift by hand is telling you exactly that.
The other regular job is a curtain that has come out of its guides, usually after a windy afternoon or a knock from a vehicle. That is not the disaster it looks like: on most Gliderol doors the curtain can be re-seated and the guides straightened without a full replacement, provided the slats themselves have not been creased.

Roller doors are among the easiest doors to keep going, because almost every part of one is replaceable on its own. A curtain can be swapped without touching the guides; springs and drums can be rebuilt without a new curtain; a bent bottom rail can be replaced by itself. That is why we very rarely condemn a Gliderol roller door outright — it usually needs one component, not a new door.
Colour matching on a full curtain is generally straightforward on the current Colorbond range, with the usual caveat that a new curtain next to a sun-faded frame will look newer for a season or two. Coastal suburbs are the exception worth knowing about: salt gets into the drum end, the brackets and the fixings long before the curtain shows anything, so a Scarborough or Fremantle door often needs hardware attention earlier than an inland one.
