Gliderol or B&D — which is better?

In our experience neither is clearly better. Both are long-established Australian manufacturers with comparable build quality, and the choice usually comes down to price, the colours and profiles available, and what the builder already had a supply arrangement for. We repair both, and we have no financial reason to steer you either way.

Can a Gliderol curtain be replaced without a whole new door?

Yes, and that is normally what we do. On a roller door the curtain, the springs, the drum and the bottom rail are all separate components, so a creased or corroded curtain can be swapped while the rest stays. It is one of the reasons roller doors are cheaper to keep running than sectional doors.

My roller door has come out of its guides. Is it wrecked?

Usually not. A curtain that has jumped a guide after wind or a knock can normally be re-seated and the guides straightened, as long as the slats themselves are not creased. Do not force it up or down in the meantime — that is what turns a straightforward re-seat into a new curtain.

How long do Gliderol roller doors last?

The curtain commonly goes twenty years or more. The springs and drum inside it are wear parts and will want attention every seven to ten years depending on how often the door cycles, and sooner in the coastal suburbs where salt attacks the hardware first.

Do you service Gliderol doors you did not install?

Yes. Most of the Gliderol doors we work on were fitted by a builder years ago. We service, repair and replace parts on them right across the Perth metro, whoever supplied them originally.

The Roller Door Brand Behind a Lot of Perth Garages

Gliderol has been Australian-owned since 1974 and is known first and foremost for roller doors. Its Essentials curtains are on a great many Perth homes, often fitted by a builder who never mentioned the brand at all, and the sectional Genesis range turns up on newer builds. It is a straightforward door to work on, which is part of why it stays common.

A roller door lives or dies on its spring. The spring sits inside the drum at the top and does the lifting; the opener only guides the curtain and holds it shut. When the spring weakens, the motor starts hauling the full weight of the steel and everything downstream — gears, brackets, the curtain's own bottom rail — takes more punishment than it should. The other regular job is a curtain that has come out of its guides, usually after a windy afternoon or a knock from a vehicle. That is not the disaster it looks like: on most Gliderol doors the curtain can be re-seated and the guides straightened without a full replacement, provided the slats themselves have not been creased.

Gliderol curtains, springs and drums

Roller doors are among the easiest doors to keep going, because almost every part of one is replaceable on its own. A curtain can be swapped without touching the guides; springs and drums can be rebuilt without a new curtain; a bent bottom rail can be replaced by itself. That is why we very rarely condemn a Gliderol roller door outright — it usually needs one component, not a new door.

Colour matching on a full curtain is generally straightforward on the current Colorbond range, with the usual caveat that a new curtain next to a sun-faded frame will look newer for a season or two. Coastal suburbs are the exception worth knowing about: salt gets into the drum end, the brackets and the fixings long before the curtain shows anything, so a Scarborough or Fremantle door often needs hardware attention earlier than an inland one.
