It depends on what has failed, and we would rather look than guess. The things that move the price are the part itself, whether that is a spring, a cable, a set of rollers, a motor or a damaged panel; whether one spring or a matched pair has to be replaced; the size and weight of the door; and how easy the door is to get at. There is no call-out fee, and the price is agreed with you before any work starts. The figure we agree is the figure on the invoice, and if we find something else while we are there, we stop and talk to you before touching it. By a long way, a broken spring or cable. Springs do the lifting on every sectional and roller door, they sit under tension for years, and when one lets go the door suddenly weighs what it really weighs. The motor then hums and gives up, or the door lifts crooked and jams, and the call we get describes one of those two symptoms rather than the word spring. After springs come openers and motors: worn drive gears, tired logic boards, remotes that have lost their pairing. Third is a door that has jumped its tracks, usually after a car nudges it or a cable frays and drops one side. Spring replacement is the job we do more than any other, and we balance and test the door before we leave so the new spring is not fighting a bent track.

Repairing is nearly always the cheaper answer for a single fault: a spring, a cable, a motor or a couple of panels on a door whose frame and tracks are sound. Replacing starts to make sense when the faults are stacking up, when the curtain of a roller door is rusted through or the panels of a sectional door are bowed so the door will never seal again, or when parts for an old opener are no longer made. Our rule is simple: if the repair would cost a large share of what a new door does, and the door is old enough that the next failure is close, we say so and quote both. Springs are rated in cycles, not years: one cycle is the door going up and coming down once, and a standard residential spring is built for a set number of them. A household that uses the door a few times a day gets through that in well under a decade, and a home where the garage is the front door gets there sooner. Weather shortens the life further, because damp and salt pit the steel and a pitted spring fatigues early. The warning signs are a door that feels heavier than it did, one that slams shut or lifts crooked, and a loud bang from the garage, which is the sound of a spring breaking. Both springs on a two-spring door have done the same work, so if one has gone we check the other and quote the pair. Once a year for most homes, and twice a year where the door takes the weather, because salt and damp corrode springs and cables faster than anything else does. A garage door service is not a squirt of lubricant: we check the door's balance, re-tension the springs, inspect the cables for fraying, look at the rollers and hinges, set the opener's travel and force limits, and test the safety reverse. Wear shows up long before a part fails, and catching it on a service visit costs less than the emergency call the failure would otherwise turn into.
