How a new roller door goes in, and what we check first
A roller door is a steel curtain wound round a drum above the opening, with springs inside the drum doing most of the lifting. It is the plainest, toughest door you can put on a garage or shed, which is why so many Perth homes, carports and backyard workshops have one. The install only looks simple: the door is only as good as the measure behind it and the tension it is given.
The measure comes first. Width and height of the opening, then side room for the brackets on each side, and headroom above the lintel for the coiled curtain, which gets bulkier the taller the door. We also look at the jambs. Crumbling mortar, a timber post gone soft, or brickwork out of plumb all need sorting before new guides go on, or the curtain will bind in them from day one.
On the day, the old door comes down first. That is the risky part: the drum springs are wound up, and a curtain dropped or a bracket unbolted under load can do real damage. Then new guides are fixed plumb, the drum and brackets go up, the curtain is lifted and fastened on, and the tension is wound in until the door floats at waist height.
