My LiftMaster runs but the door does not move. What is that?

Almost certainly a stripped drive gear — it is the single most common failure on these units and a well-supported repair. The motor spins, the sprocket does not, and nothing reaches the door. Stop operating it once it is doing that, because the debris from a shredded gear does not improve anything.

Can you still get parts for an older LiftMaster?

Gear kits, sprockets, capacitors, sensors and remotes, generally yes. Control boards are the part with a real end of life, and on a twenty-year-old unit a board can cost most of what a new opener does. That is the point where we would tell you to replace rather than repair.

Is a chain drive worth keeping?

Mechanically, yes — chain drives are durable and easy to service. The complaint is noise, particularly where a bedroom sits above the garage. If the unit is otherwise healthy, that is a preference rather than a fault, and it is worth weighing against the cost of a quieter belt-drive replacement.

Why does my LiftMaster reverse just before it closes?

The safety beam across the bottom of the opening is not seeing a clear path — misaligned, dirty, or with a damaged wire, all of which are common after a decade. It is a small repair. Do not bypass it: that beam is what stops the door closing on something it should not.

The Older Sectional Opener, and When to Stop Repairing It

LiftMaster Professional openers have been going onto Australian sectional doors for a long time, and the LM60 and LM1000 units are the ones we meet most in Perth. They are solid, mechanical machines — chain or belt drive, a simple rail, a sprocket and a gear kit — and most of what fails on them is replaceable.

The gear kit is the classic. A LiftMaster that runs, sounds normal and does nothing has almost always shredded its drive gear, which is a routine part to replace on these units. Sensors are next: the beam across the opening is what makes a door reverse before it closes, and after a decade the wiring or the alignment usually needs attention — the work our safety beam repairs cover.

Where we will tell you to stop is a failed logic board on an older unit. Boards are the one part with a genuine end of life, and on an opener that is already twenty years old, a board that costs most of a new motor is not a repair worth making. We would rather say that than take the job.

Choosing the next opener

A new motor is sized to your door: roller, sectional or tilt, and how heavy it is. Most people end up with a belt drive for the quiet running, and most current units can be run from a phone as well as a remote. We take the old motor away.

Before it goes up, the door is balanced by hand. An opener dragging a badly tensioned door burns out early, so the springs get sorted first.
