Garage Door Off Track: Why It Happens and What to Do

Safety first: the opener is disconnected and the door supported or clamped so it cannot drop, with spring tension released where needed. Then the cause is fixed before anything goes back — a bent track straightened or replaced, brackets refastened, worn rollers swapped, a slipped cable re-wound. The rollers are re-seated, the door is run by hand to check it tracks true, springs are re-tensioned and the opener's limits and force re-tested.

An impact leads the list — car, trailer, ladder or wheelie bin. Behind that come worn rollers wobbling in the guide, cables that have lost tension so the door lifts crooked, loose track brackets, and tracks that were never quite parallel. Sand packed into the bottom of the track lifts a roller out of the channel. On older doors it is usually two of these at once.

We would rather you did not. A sectional door hangs from cables on drums that carry the torsion spring's load, and freeing a roller changes how that load is held; the door can swing or one side can drop while your hands are between panel and track. Roller doors are worse, because the curtain is one sprung sheet. For all but the simplest case on a small single door, book a garage door repair.

It depends on what let go and what got damaged on the way. Re-seating rollers on an undamaged door with a loose bracket is the small job. Add new rollers, a length of track or a cable back on its drum and it grows. A door hit by a car with a bent panel can become a conversation about panel replacement. Ideally you do not. An off-track door is jammed against the guides meant to hold it, and forcing it up or down bends more of them and risks it dropping. Use a side door if there is one. If there is not and a car has to come out, ring us and describe what you see; we can often tell you over the phone whether it is safe to touch, and if not we come and free it.

If a worn roller or loose bracket caused it, yes — with new rollers and the track true again it runs as before. If a vehicle bent a panel, the door may run but the crease stays; a bent bottom panel can sometimes be straightened enough to seal and sometimes needs replacing, which you hear on the day. Cables that have jumped are checked for kinks and replaced rather than re-used if damaged.
