Garage Door Off Its Tracks?

Rollers out of their guides and panels leaning at an angle. An off-track door is one more press of the button away from bent rails and a much larger bill.

Quick Answer

A garage door comes off its track when the rollers are forced out of their guides — most often after the door closes onto an obstruction, takes a knock from a vehicle, loses a cable so one side unloads, or simply wears its rollers flat until one jumps out. The door then leans, binds and can fall. Stop operating it immediately: every further attempt bends more track and can pull additional rollers out. Re-seating the door, straightening the rails and replacing damaged rollers is quoted once we have seen the damage. If a cable let go as part of the failure, that is re-rigged and quoted with it.

Common Causes

Closing onto an obstruction

A bin, a bike or a bumper left in the opening twists the door as it lands. The most frequent single cause we attend.

Vehicle contact

Even a gentle nudge while reversing knocks the bottom panel out of line and levers its rollers clear of the guides.

Snapped or slipped cable

When one cable lets go the weight shifts sideways, and the unloaded side climbs straight out of its track.

Worn or flat-spotted rollers

Rollers that have gone square wobble in the guide until one pops out under load. Cheap parts, expensive consequences.

Bent rail or loose brackets

A track knocked out of line, or mounting brackets that have vibrated loose over years, gives the rollers an exit point.

Wind loading on an exposed opening

Wind gets under a partly open door on an exposed block and can flex it hard enough to unseat rollers.

What You Can Check Safely

Safe to check yourself

  • Stop using the door immediately — do not press the button 'one more time'
  • From a distance, note which rollers are out and whether a cable has come loose
  • Check whether the door is leaning, and which side is lower
  • Keep people, pets and cars out from under and away from the door
  • If the door is stuck open, treat your garage as unsecured until it is repaired

Do not attempt

  • Do not run the opener again to try to straighten it — that is how one bent bracket becomes a full track replacement
  • Do not hammer or lever the rollers back into the track by hand
  • Do not release the trolley on a door that is part-way open and leaning
  • Do not drive a vehicle through the opening while the door is unstable

When to Call a Technician

Call a technician straight away if any of the following apply:

  • Any roller is visibly sitting outside its track
  • The door is leaning, twisted or wedged at an angle
  • A cable is hanging loose or off its drum
  • The track is visibly bent, kinked or pulled away from the wall
  • The door moved after an impact and has not run properly since

Door off track and stuck open?

That leaves your garage unsecured and the door unstable. We are open 24 hours and prioritise doors that cannot be closed — the after-hours surcharge is agreed before dispatch.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is one to leave alone. Putting a door back in its guides means taking the tension out of the system, supporting the door's weight while the rollers are re-seated, straightening any bent rail and then re-balancing — with a heavy panel that wants to fall and springs that are still loaded. Attempts with a crowbar reliably turn a straightforward repair into bent panels and replaced rails. Note which rollers are out, leave it exactly as it is, and call.
